Lacock village, dating back to the 13th century, remains largely unchanged over the centuries and has many limewashed, half-timbered and stone houses. During the Middle Ages Lacock became a prosperous and thriving town through its wool industry.
The Fox Talbot Museum commemorates the life and work of William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-77),
former resident of Lacock Abbey. A gentleman scholar of considerable means and social standing, he studied the arts and sciences and kept detailed notes of his endeavours. In 1840 he discovered the negative/positive photographic process.
Talbot made the earliest known surviving photographic negative on paper in the late summer of 1835, a small photogenic drawing of the oriel window of the south gallery of his home, Lacock Abbey.
The Fox Talbot Museum holds a large collection of Talbot images, notebooks and letters from the Lacock Abbey collection. The museum is housed in a medieval barn located at the gates of the Abbey. The course venue is located next door ---
